ANSWERS

bullet Q:  I am looking for a way to make a contact sheet of several photos and include the EXIF data with the photos.  Do you know of a easy way to do this ?
bullet A:  A convenient software to do this is Zoner Photo Studio.  More details on how to do it at How to date photo and print them with EXIF.

bullet Q:  I am trying to find software that will allow me to print two pictures per page,  with the embedded date &time from the camera.
bullet A:  You need a software that is able to print "contact sheets" together with a selection of the EXIF data of your photos.  A convenient one is Zoner Photo Studio.  More details on how to do it at How to date photo and print them with EXIF.

bullet Q:  Some of my photos have lost their EXIF data, what can I do ?
bullet A:  Many photo editors, especially older ones, do lose the EXIF data when you use them to modify your photos.  That is if you improve the contrast,  resize or crop your photos or do whatever modification where you will save your photo after doing it.  Unfortunately there is not much you can do if you did not keep the original untouched photo.  The EXIF data are irremediably lost.

If you still have the original photo,  you can backup its EXIF data and insert it into your modified photo with Exifer.

bullet Q:  My photos have EXIF data, but no "taken date", how can it be ?
bullet A:  Basic information like the date, aperture, shutter speed etc should be written into the EXIF data of the photo by any camera.  "Normally" differences between camera makes should only be with the "makernotes".  Makernotes are mostly completely different with different makes.

Nevertheless some cameras seem to save EXIF data without saving the "taken date".  The user who did report the problem did send me one of his photos.  While the other EXIF fields (camera name, aperture, shutter speed etc...) were present, the EXIF date fields were empty. The camera of the user is a Nikon Coolpix 880.

Now I do not pretend that every Coolpix 880 shows the same problem.  It may be one out of a given series,  it may only be the Coolpix 880's sold in a specific Country,  it may even be that some fake (and unperfect) Coolpix 880's have found their way to the market. Who knows ?

bullet Q:  I would like to burn photo CD's. How can I do it ?
bullet A:  If it is just for backups for yourself, any CD burning software will do it.  The easiest should be to take the software you did get with your CD burner drive.  Easy CD Creator and Nero are very common on the Windows platform.

If you want to give CD's away, you may like it to have some viewer software burned on the CD in addition to your photos.  Many photo softwares are able to do this.  More details at Copy photos to CD

bullet Q:  I can't find any way of getting my digital camera to work on my pc.
bullet A:  With most digital cameras you get a pc software.  This software is intended to be used to get the photos onto the pc and to do some other tasks too.

Indeed most of these programs are not very convenient and you can easily go without ever using them.  Easy ways to acquire your photos (i.e. get the photos onto the computer) are described at  PC camera software or how to by-pass them to acquire photos.

bullet Q:  I had a hard drive crash.  A recovery software program recovered a number of digital photos but for some reason saved them with the file extension ".PHB".  Photoshop can't open this file so I can't change it. Any ideas?
bullet A:  A file with an unknown and bad file extension should be renamed first.  After that it can be opened again.  Easy recipes to rename a file or to rename a bunch of files at  Rename File Extension.

bullet Q:  My roommate, thinking to help save space, compressed my photos and saved them at the new smaller size. How can I undo it?
bullet A:  First it is important to note that photo compression and photo resizing are 2 completely different things. The short answer is that neither photo compression nor photo resizing can be undone, since a part of the original information is lost and can not be retrieved by magic. There is a more detailed explanation at Photo resizing versus photo compression.
